Visit one of Norway´s southernmost cabins! Li Farm is an old farm built on a remote hill facing an amazing panoramic view towards the Hidra island. In the old days families lived in the mountains by the sea and lived off fish, farm animals and hunting.  In 1989 the last inhabitant – a Dutch woman- moved from the farm. Since 1991 the local DNT – the Norwegian Trekking Association – has offered the farmstead as a DNT cabin.

Around the historic farm location, there are several options for outdoor activities. You can hike, paddle, fish or climb by using via ferrata route along the dramatic cliffs by to the sea. There are no animals at the farm. A fifteen-minute-stroll through the forest brings you to the Dåtlandstrand harbour.

Culture and history

It is assumed that Li Farm could be over 1.000 years old, but that it was desolated after the Plague. The farm was probably subject to another larger farm, Kleppa, for a longer period of time. At the beginning of the 1600-hundreds there was a growth in the population in the area, and different new farms started to pop up. It is assumed that also Li Farm became independent and inhabitated. Det first census that gives the numbers of the population in the Hidra area was in 1801. At that time 11 persons lived at the farm – two adults and nine children. The last resident moved in 1989. Today the farm is operated by Flekkefjord og Oplands Turistforening (F.O.T).

Geology

In the Flekkefjord municipality, the geology of the area is representing the edge of the magma chamber, and around Li Farm you will find four different type of solid rock. The oldest rocks in Magma Geopark, are more than 1.600 million years old gneisses. Deep below the surface of the earth, huge volumes of magma was forced to contact the gneissic rocks 925 million years ago. The magma solidified to form a new rock type, anorthosite. The anorthosite and gneiss were during this time located 20 kilometers below the surface of the earth. After the anorthosite was formed, two different kind of magma was forced between the rocks types; one to form a light-coloured, coarse-grained, feldspar-rich rock called mangerite whereas the other is richer in dark minerals and fine-grained type of rock called jotunite.

Along the path from Fidsel to Li Farm take a look on the solid rocks around you, you will see blocks of light-coloured mangerite enclosed in darker jotunite. The jotunite is the youngest of these four rock types in the area, rock tripes of jotunite extend into anorthosite and mangerite.
